Class Experience

** SLOTS FOR THIS CLASS ARE CREATED ON REQUEST. Please either self-book or message me with some suitable times and your time zone, and I will see if I can offer a mutually agreeable time slot**

In this class, learners will be encouraged to develop their Public Speaking skills by re-telling their version of a famous, recognisable Fairy Tale, and then they will be invited to develop those skills a step further by telling their very own story.

Each week learners will tell their version of a well-known traditional Fairy Tale story with the help of prompts from Mrs. T, a PDF version pre-class, and engaging green screen backgrounds of different scenes from the story to support them. We'll work together on helping it sound expressive, engaging, and exciting with different Public Speaking techniques, using time connectives, adjectives, and vocabulary tips. Then they'll be shown how to take a key narrative element of the story (like a powerful villain, using an anti-hero, adding a moral, or a quest), and use imaginative green screen backgrounds to inspire them to create their very own story, using the more of the same techniques. Depending on how inspired learners are we can work on a new story each week, a story across several weeks, or a story across the whole 10 weeks broken up into several chapters.

Week 1- We'll explore 'Jack and the Beanstalk',
Week 2- We'll explore 'Goldilocks and the three bears',
Week 3- We'll explore the 'Gingerbread Man',
Week 4- We'll explore 'Cinderella',
Week 5- We'll explore 'Pinocchio',
Week 6- We'll explore 'Rapunzel',
Week 7- We'll explore 'The three little pigs',
Week 8- We'll explore 'Snow White'
Week 9- We'll explore the 'Three Billy Goat's Gruff'
Week 10- We'll explore 'The Frog Prince' or if the learner has a favourite Fairy Tale that Mrs. T knows and we haven't covered yet, (with at least 6 weeks' notice) Mrs. T will create some bespoke scene backgrounds for a telling of this story.

Mrs. T will support learners in the telling of both stories with structural tips and will encourage the use of key Public Speaking skills such as changes in pitch, pace, volume, use of pauses, emphasis, tone, and character voices. Learners will be given a version of each Fairy Tale in PDF form before each class, which they can use to prepare and as a prompt to support their re-telling of the Fairy Tale.

Each class will also start with a useful vocal/mouth warm-up and a fun tongue twister, so learners can truly express themselves in the best way vocally.

Learning Goals

Learners will develop their Public Speaking skills and speaking confidence by looking at their use of pace, pitch, pauses, emphasis, tone, and character voices.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Southampton
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 16+ years of experience teaching Drama (and Performing Arts, English, Music, and PSHCE- Personal Social Health Education) in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties,  nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos and have a regular podcast.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best performance, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. Previous learners have achieved several A+ grades in a speech and drama festival, top grades in a session of 20, and a Bronze overall against native speakers, second round of a national competition. I have also coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15).
