Class Experience

A great class to prepare a poem or speech for a competition, festival, assessment, class presentation, or talent show, or for building extra skills in an intensive session.

Also a great taster class to see if you want to pursue more public speaking classes, or sign up for a longer course.

In our first class learners will develop their understanding of the text chosen and start to work on HOW to say it (para-verbal techniques). Such as where it would be more engaging to speak louder or quieter, add emphasis, and pauses etc. We will also work on appropriate tone/expression and correct any articulation and pronunciation issues.

For homework learners will be asked to try to learn the speech/poem/piece of prose from memory.

In our second class we will check the level of memorisation (learners who learn their piece well will find it easier to add in non-verbal techniques, and reach a higher level of presentation), re-cap the verbal presenting, and add in non-verbal presenting techniques (facial expressions, gestures, body language, appropriate movements etc).

Mrs. T can offer a choice of texts (poem, prose, published speech, or even Shakespeare) for learners to select from, or can work with something learners have been allocated for a competition or assessment etc.

This class can be taken by beginners up to experienced Public Speakers, as Mrs. T will use her years of experience to assess when to add more techniques depending on how the learner is progressing, often helping them to achieve results beyond their own expectations (previous learners have achieved gold in the International Oracy festival, second round in a class speech competition, A+'s in assessments, got through to regional finals when they had never managed it before, or been able to deliver a class presentation in front of their class when they didn't have the confidence previously).
Learning Goals
Students will prepare a piece ready for presenting in a competition, assessment, class presentation, or personal development setting, developing their use of verbal and non-verbal techniques and building their public speaking confidence.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Southampton
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 18 years of experience teaching Drama (and Performing Arts, English, Music, and PSHCE (Personal Social Health Education) in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties, nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best performance, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. I have coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15), and I recently attended his final year drama degree performance.
