Assessment
Success lies in writing the entire story in your head, no matter the length or the quality. Once you've written a story, the draft of a novel, or something in between, you'll have so much more confidence writing in setting out to write the next one. I will work with the student to assign achievable goals that can be accomplished in addition to other life activities and school work.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 12
Intermediate - Advanced Level
FOR EVERYONE: Anyone can write a story--and have fun doing it. Try this class if your bright learner wants to excel at writing. FOR THE AMBITIOUS: Even talented students need support and guidance. One on one tutoring will guide a young writer through the twists and turns of writing longer stories--maybe even the first draft of a novel. WANT TO WRITE A NOVEL? Writing a novel for beginners is not too hard--if learners have help. Whether it's providing a learner with examples, or giving exercises that relate to what comes next in the novel, I can help support a learner in creating a first draft. They'll get creative guidance--just as much as needed--every week through the first steps of writing a longer story. Your learner's words may end up becoming a full length short story, a novella or a whole novel. Wherever your learner is at, I'll help them get better. Learning Goals
Students will learn how to create a sustained narrative and common craft skills related to longer works of fiction.
FOR THE AMBITIOUS: Sometimes your student will be asked to revise scenes or make notes for future revisions. We may pick a novel to use as a model and examine the plot devices or craft tools being used in the story. Each week we will write, read out loud what we've written, and plan for what comes next. Most of my students wind up completing the draft of a novel or novella in less than a year. Some are as young as twelve years old.
I also teaches strong analysis skills to my students which will, of course, strengthen their reading comprehension and retention.
Other Details
Supply List
Students may need to buy a few books we can use for analysis during the course. Students will need a notebook and pen for tracking, notes, and as an alternative for outlining and writing on the computer. Students need regular access to a computer. Some students may also want to purchase Scrivener--a professional novel writing software program. It's not expensive, but not necessary.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I've been acting as a book doctor to professional authors and younger writers for over eight years now. Writers form a highly engaged relationship with me during this process. While we remain goal oriented, at the same time, I ensure the student writer is stimulated and yet feels secure as I guide them. It's a journey we take together: one in which students will learn novel writing tools as needed.
