Join this enlightening class, tailored for students aged 9 to 17, to explore the compelling world of smartphones and video games. With Jo, a seasoned computer programmer who has worked on developing apps and games, students will gain critical insights into the mechanisms of digital addiction and learn how to navigate their digital habits healthily. Course Content: Detailed exploration of digital addiction, including what makes smartphones and video games hard to put down. We’ll discuss the dopamine-driven feedback loops that games and social media create to keep users engaged. Review of extensive peer-reviewed research that outlines the psychological and physical effects of excessive screen time. This includes impacts on sleep patterns, social interactions, and academic performance. Practical, age-appropriate strategies to help students recognize signs of excessive use and effectively manage their digital habits. What You Will Learn: The science behind screen addiction: Understanding how and why digital platforms are designed to be addictive. Tools for recognizing signs of unhealthy technology use in oneself and others. We will cover common indicators of digital addiction such as mood changes, withdrawal from social activities, and neglect of responsibilities. Strategies to regain control: Techniques for setting limits, such as using app trackers, setting screen-free times, and engaging in alternative activities that promote physical and mental well-being. Interactive Elements: Discussions on personal experiences with technology, fostering a supportive environment where students can share and learn from each other. Role-playing scenarios to practice setting boundaries with technology use. Creation of personalized action plans for balanced technology use. No experience is required to take this class.
