Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 6
In this two part session I will assess your child's reading level using levelled books. I will share your child's reading level with the final report. I will also assess your child's phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to manipulate individual sounds and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up from a sequence of sounds. I will use several different auditory tests that require your child to repeat back and isolate phonemes, segment words and blend words together.

In the second session I will assess your child's phonetic awareness. Phonetic awareness is essential for reading success. I will show them a series of digraphs, vowel combinations, blends and letter blends to see how many of these combinations they know. This assessment will help you to teach your child the parts of words that they need to learn. I will administer a spelling assessment with your child. This test will help level your child according to their developmental spelling level. This knowledge will also help you to improve their spelling abilities by providing you with the exact spelling patterns that they need to focus on to improve their spelling abilities.

Throughout my 21 years of teaching I have worked with 100s of learners with different strengths and needs. As a teacher, my goal is to provide a safe and encouraging space where students feel comfortable taking risks in learning.

In order to participate in the assessment students should know all 26 letters and their corresponding sounds. They should be starting to blend CVC (consonant- vowel- consonant) words. No writing is required for these assessments it is all based on reading and verbal responses.
