學生社團內容

This group is designed as a social experience for any student who has a disability and is looking for some social interaction and fostering new friendships. This group will serve as an opportunity to communicate with others, make new friends, and have some fun! All abilities are welcomed, including students with autism, cognitive delays, Down Syndrome, and other exceptionalities.

Some of the ways that group members will be able to interact include:

Discussion Posts – Topics of conversation will be posted periodically to initiate conversations amongst group members. Some examples may be discussing shared interests such as hobbies, favourite movies, etc., favourite parts of the day, a pet corner where students can share pictures and information about their pets, and much more!

“Favourites” Topic of the Week – Each week, a new topic of conversation will be posted regarding learner “favourites”. Examples will include: favourite movie, favourite animal, favourite school subject, favourite sport, etc. These topics will allow learners to find shared interests amongst the group.

Games and Activities – Periodically, there will be a variety of small games and activities. Examples of games are: Would You Rather, Photo Scavenger Hunts, Zoom Guessing Games, etc. The games and activities are completely optional to participate in and learners are welcome to comment on any learner posts even if they don’t want to participate in the games.

As the moderator, I look forward to bringing new ideas each week to engage learners, facilitate discussions, lead activities, and create a positive and welcoming community for all learners.

This group is a great opportunity for students with disabilities to meet new friends from around the world and have some virtual fun in a safe and supportive community!

Welcome to our Group! We want all of our learners to feel comfortable, connected, and safe. That's why we have 3 rules we ask you to follow: Be Kind, Be Safe, and Be Respectful. Be Kind - Help all learners feel welcome and included. Learners from all over the world, with different backgrounds, races, ethnicities, abilities, gender identities, religions and body types, participate in our Group. Always be nice and make others, especially new learners, know that they belong and are welcome. Teasing, name calling, or bullying anybody in our community? Nope. Not happening here Be Safe - Keep your personal information private and never ask other learners for theirs. Personal things are personal. We want to keep you safe on Outschool, but we also want YOU to understand how to be safe when you're meeting other learners or teachers. Keep your full name, home address, gaming or social media name, email, and school name private. Be Respectful - Treat others how you want to be treated. Keep language clean and information you share safe. If you wouldn't say it or share with your grandma, don't do it here. Swear words, racy videos, and violent images are not allowed. Treat Outschool like a public place, and when in doubt, keep things covered. Have fun!

I have been working specifically with individuals with disabilities (including autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delays, and nonverbal to name a few) ranging from 3-18 years-old for over seven years and currently work in Inclusive Recreation where I create and implement fun recreational opportunities for members of my community who have disabilities, which is very important to me. Some of the recreation opportunities I have created are adapted camps, movement programs, art programs, inclusive holiday events, and sporting events. Additionally, in this position, I have also taught hundreds of staff how to accommodate, program plan, and support children with various exceptionalities. Furthermore, I am a certified educator in Canada with a Special Education Part 1 certification, a Masters in Child Study and Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Studies and a minor in Psychology. I have learned extensively about disability and childhood development in all of these programs as well as how to appropriately accommodate and adapt programming and lessons for various needs. Lastly, I have had many experiences working in rehabilitation hospitals and Special Education classrooms where I worked hands-on teaching and creating programming and lessons that supported the various needs of my students who all had a range of disabilities.
