What should I keep? What should I remove? How can I change the wording to make it more powerful? This class will practice editing and rewriting by working with four different stories. Week 1Lesson 1Story 1-Realistic FictionWe will read and discuss the first story, an immigrant who feels lonely and makes a friend. We will look for what needs to be changed and/or added (descriptions, more dialogue, show-not-tell)Week 2Lesson 2Read and compareRead and discuss everyone's versions to see how each student has tackled the task of editing and rewriting the story.Week 3Lesson 3Story 2- FantasyRead and discuss the second 500-word story, a fairy named Pine gets their wings (fantasy), to see what needs improvement. We will look for what needs to be changed and/or added (descriptions, more dialogue, show-not-tell)Week 4Lesson 4Read and compareRead and discuss everyone's versions to see how each student has tackled the task of editing and rewriting the story.Week 5Lesson 5Story 3-Ghost StoryRead and discuss the third 500-word story, a ghost story taking place in an old castle (ghost story), to see what needs improvement. We will look for what needs to be changed and/or added (descriptions, more dialogue, show-not-tell)Week 6Lesson 6Read and compareRead and discuss everyone's versions to see how each student has tackled the task of editing and rewriting the story.Week 7Lesson 7Story 4-Historical fiction/Realistic fictionRead and discuss the fourth 500-word story; Elsa is cooking Sunday dinner for her granddaughter and her family, reflecting on her life (the civil rights movement, meeting Martin Luther King Jr.) and how the world has changed. (Historical Fiction/Realistic Fiction), to see what needs improvement. We will also discuss the importance of research for historical fiction.Week 8Lesson 8Read and compareRead and discuss everyone's versions to see how each student has tackled the task of editing and rewriting the story.
