The US Judicial System has two sides. The Criminal side deals with individuals who break laws. On the Civil side, the justice system attempts to solve disputes when someone feels they have been wronged. A classic example is a show like Judge Judy, where individuals bring each other to court over disputes they have or the commercials that ask if you have used a particular product. Though a real civil case does not necessarily have the same theatrics as Judge Judy, it is important to...
Students will gain an understanding of the civil trial process and use critical thinking skills to determine the outcome of the case.
Laura Forde has taught about civil and criminal cases since 2003. She has researched and read the briefs on the cases to get a full understanding of the case.
We try to make sure that we don't choose topics that are too difficult for kids to deal with. So, for example, the bullying cases do not result in suicide and we try to choose some cases that are of high interest to kids this age. If there is something that is sensitive, we note that next to the case and week it will occur.
We use the briefs for the cases and judicial decisions as well as other information from secondary sources that analyze it.
