課堂經歷
Are you ready to transform your writing skills and bring your stories to life? Welcome to our engaging and innovative writing class, where we break down the art of writing into its most fundamental element: the sentence. Writing is often perceived as a daunting task, with the focus typically placed on completing an entire piece. However, we believe that confidence in writing begins with mastering the tools and techniques needed to create impactful sentences. Class Overview In this class, we introduce the concept of sentence stacking, a successful method used in numerous schools across the United Kingdom. This approach involves examining and modeling an idea or writing extract, discussing the techniques used, and brainstorming with students to explore different ways to apply these techniques in their own words. Through collaborative and independent practice, students will craft effective and engaging sentences. Who Can Join? This class is open to writers of all abilities who can independently construct a simple sentence. Whether you're just beginning your writing journey or looking to refine your skills, this class provides a supportive environment for growth. What Will You Learn? Throughout the course, we’ll dive into a variety of writing techniques, including: Repetition: Creating rhythm and emphasis Similes: Drawing vivid comparisons Onomatopoeia: Bringing sounds to life Alliteration: Adding musicality to your writing Rhyming: Enhancing the flow and structure Personification: Giving life to inanimate objects Adjectives and Adverbs: Adding detail and depth Complex Sentences and Adverbial Phrases: Crafting sophisticated narrative structures Class Structure The class is guided and designed around the timeless tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. Students will learn techniques applicable to any fairy tale and are encouraged to write their own alongside Jack and the Beanstalk. Pre-recorded Lessons: Each week, students receive a YouTube link to a video lesson with three focused writing goals, such as using similes, exciting verbs, or powerful adjectives. Interactive Learning: Students will watch, learn, and then create their own sentences based on the teacher’s model. Feedback and Support: After completing two lessons per week, students submit their writing for personalized feedback via video, offering encouragement and suggestions for improvement. Independent Creativity: In addition to following along with Jack and the Beanstalk, students will apply learned techniques to write an independent fairy tale. Additional Resources Each lesson includes printable materials to support both the guided writing exercises and independent story creation. Our setup ensures that students can fully participate in the lesson, regardless of its pre-recorded format. Hello, my name is Carlin King. I am a Year 1 teacher living and working in the United Kingdom. I have been a primary school teacher for more than ten years and love being part of the formative years. I have been trained in a number of different phonetic programmes including RWInc (Read, Write Inc).
My greatest passion is teaching children to read and write. As a child, I loved to write stories. I found it came naturally to me as I was a total book worm. However, as a teacher, I have seen that many children struggle with creativity, vocabulary and sentence structure when it comes to their writing. When children have both a writing model and an interest in the subject matter - that is when creative writing takes shape. Engaging and exciting themes, fun and well-written books and fascinating historical events and characters are just some of the subjects I like to use in my writing lessons. These classes will be for primary school children roughly between the ages of 5-8. Basic phonetic knowledge needs to be there as we can then sound out and build sentences together.
I am a firm believer in teaching phonics when it comes to fluent and confident reading. I have been teaching children to read throughout my teaching career and have had many experiences in different phonetic programmes. I decided to create my own phonic reading scheme, using what I know works, and make it engaging and exciting for children.
I believe teaching is about having fun and allowing children to get emersed in a subject. As a teacher, I strive to be a guide - allowing children to let their interest and curiosity drive their learning. As a child, I loved school and was privileged to go to more than one school as I spent my childhood living in different parts of Africa. I was born in Nambia and then moved to Ghana when I was nine years old. As a teenager, I attended a wonderful boarding school in South Africa. I now live in England with my husband and two gorgeous babies.
