Students will learn about Benjamin Banneker, a great inventor, and write his biography. Students will learn the components of a biography. - They also will learn the elements of good writing. - They will learn how to do descriptive writing. Students will learn how to revise and have the opportunity to revise their writing. Students will do independent writing. Students will learn the components of writing a biography. Students will learn about Benjamin Banneker. Students will develop their writer’s voice. Students will learn the mechanics of good writing, such as descriptive and figurative language. Students will discover creative ways to express their ideas.
I have taught writing to youth for over 25 years. I currently also teach college writing and facilitate writing workshops for elementary and middle school students. I have a Ph.D. in the area of literacy, language, society, and culture from U.C. Berkeley. One of my areas of research is also Black history.

Students will need paper and pencils; if some students are fine using their computer only to write that is fine as well. Students will need crayons, colored pencils, or markers. Students will need a white sheet of paper (construction or computer printer paper fine).
