World Book Day is held every year on the first Thursday of March, when we celebrate reading and the skill of authors who give us exciting worlds and fascinating facts. Join one of our classes during March to share your love of books and reading with other bookworms. During this class, we will talk about why we love reading, the various genres available and both fiction and non-fiction. This will be very much a student-centred class with learners sharing their favourite books and authors and telling us why they enjoy them and recommending books and authors to each other. During class, we will imagine that we have written a fiction or non-fiction book (or imagine that our favourite author is publishing a new book) and, using the printouts provided, will design a cover for that book and create a 'blurb' for the back. We will take a brief look at some book covers first to give us some inspiration on fonts, size, type of illustration, etc, and find out exactly what a blurb is, why a book has one and how to write our own. Students are welcome to dress up as their favourite book characters if they wish to but there is no pressure to do so!

Students will learn through discussion about different genres and styles of writing. Learners will learn about 'judging a book by its cover' as we take a look at designs, the elements of a book cover and how to set out their own design. Students will learn about blurbs on books and how to write their own.
Socially, students will practice listening to others' opinions, responding respectfully and allowing each other to have time to speak. Learners will practice sharing their own thoughts and opinions and contributing positively to the discussion.

No parental guidance issues are anticipated in this class. Students are asked to share books which are appropriate for the class and not of a gory or disturbing nature.
供應清單
A printout of the cover and back of a book is provided for use during class. The pages may be printed back to back or separately as preferred. Students will need something to write and draw with and any preferred colouring pens/ pencils. Students are encouraged to bring along copies of their favourite books to show. Due to time constraints, each student will be given a chance to talk about one book/ author if they like. If everyone has had a chance to share and if time allows, we may be able to share more than one favourite but this is not guaranteed.

Reading and writing are my passions and as well as majoring in English at university, I've almost 20 years’ experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills. I've run story reading times in both public libraries and school and encouraging a love of reading in children is one of the greatest achievements I could hope for!
My favourite lessons have always been when I can find out what interests and motivates a student and use those interests to engage a learner and build their confidence.評論
