其他詳情

父母的引導和規範
Topics will be presented in a kid-friendly way. One weekly topic details the events of the fateful and cannibalistic Donner Party. Because we will be using original sources as often as possible, authors may refers to Native Americans, First Nations, and Indigenous Peoples as "Indians," as was the custom at the time. This will be explained as it is encountered throughout the class. Historical figures profiled in this class come from various cultural and faith backgrounds, and questions and potentially emotional responses that arise from sensitive subjects will be handled on an individual basis - including highlighting multiple sides of issues and referring back to original sources and varying historical accounts as well as providing learners sources to do more primary research independently.

A lifelong resident of the Wild, Wild West myself, my own homestead lies in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, not far from the end of the Oregon Trail. I have seen Chief Joseph's beloved Wallowa mountains for myself. My husband's grandmother was Blackfoot, my neighbor is Makah, and we live about 30 minutes away from the Grand Ronde Confederated Tribe Reservation - which incorporates several coastal tribes whose culture and legacy permeate the area. My own grandmother's desert ranch had original Oregon Trail wagon wheel tracks running through it - and two wagon wheels at the end of the road. I have two bachelor's degrees and a master's degree that focus on history, historical languages, and cultures.

In my youth, people from the American East Coast actually did ask me whether we still drive around in covered wagons. (The answer is no, by the way.)
