In this class, we will explore weird, funny, and incredulous stories about several of the elements of the Periodic Table. In this class, you'll learn the answers to the following questions: ~What made the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland "mad"? ~How was Lewis & Clark's journey traced by scientists? ~What do diamonds and pencil lead have in common? ~Which poisons were most common to eat in our history? ~How can you melt metal in your hand? ...and more! We will investigate several...

In addition to interesting stories about some elements of the periodic table, students will also review periodic table terminology and trends. We will briefly touch on some of the families of the periodic tables, review metals, nonmetals, and metalloids, and review what an element is and what the periodic table is used for.
I have a BS in Chemistry and an MAT in Secondary Science Education. I have been a Chemistry educator for over 10 years.

In this class, we may discuss the following potentially sensitive topics: -mercury poisoning, which causes erethism (a neurological disorder) -arsenic and antinomy, both used historically as poisons, including by the British serial killer Graham Frederick Young -The Hindenburg disaster, which resulted in 35 fatalities -Nuclear weapons and explosions, including the "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" atomic bombs and the Chernobyl disaster The discussion will be around the involvement of chemical elements in these situations.
