In this novel study of Tuck Everlasting, the students will read the novel over a three week period. The reading for each week should be done prior to the class meeting so that students will be prepared to discuss the novel. This class will focus heavily on Socratic discussion. If you are unfamiliar with the method, the University of Illinois at Springfield describes the benefits of this type of discussion like this: The goal of a Socratic dialogue is generally to achieve a consensus or plurality understanding on moral, ethical, or social issues. Students increase their critical and ethical thinking abilities and come to a greater understanding of a given issue. After completing a Socratic dialogue, students will be able to: -attempt to come to a unanimous decision on a given issue -learn to critically question a given concept -develop question and answer abilities -use pathos, ethos, and logos in a debate During the first week of class, we will discuss the prologue through chapter 8. I will introduce the class to Socratic discussion. We will also discuss the use of ethos, pathos, and logos when making an argument. I will also introduce the final project that each student will be working on. We will be doing a "Character Head" project in which students will choose a character from the book and then will create a poster that represents that character based on specific criteria given by the teacher. This project will require that students think critically about their character. During the second week of class, we will discuss chapters 9 - 17. We will continue our Socratic discussion and will evaluate the motives of the characters as well as the choices that they make. We will compare and contrast the different characters in the book. During the third week of class, we will discuss the remainder of the book. Students will be led in a discussion of the themes of the book. During the final week of class, students will present their Character Head projects to the rest of the class. We will also compare and contrast the book to the movie. Students will need to watch the movie Tuck Everlasting before this class period. The teacher will provide a handout for them to compare and contrast the differences and similarities between the two.

教師專業知識和證書
My name is Jennifer Dodge, but my students call me Mrs. Jen. I am a certified early childhood teacher with a B.S in Early Childhood Education and a minor in music from Samford University. I have spent 15 years in the classroom teaching preschool, kindergarten, and language arts to first through seventh graders. For the past eleven years, I have had the awesome privilege of homeschooling my own three children who are now ages 23, 21, and 18. Currently, I teach kindergarten in a private school .
I am excited to help students learn to read and LOVE to read through hands on activities so that they will become lifelong learners! You will find that many of my classes are geared toward developing reading skills, novel studies, and hands-on book clubs, and book clubs that center around historical fiction so that we can take a deep dive into the historical aspect of the novel. I also love to teach preschool and kindergarten aged children, so I will also be providing classes that involve practice with fine and large motor skills, music and movement, and beginning reading, math, and science skills so that my students will be ready for school.
As a former homeschool mom, I also look forward to being able to provide classes that support other homeschool moms. If there is an area where their child needs extra enrichment or assistance, or if there is a subject that a mom just simply hates to teach, I would LOVE to partner with her in the homeschooling of her children.
I believe that learning to read and write NEVER has to be boring! I teach my classes with great enthusiasm so that my students will see my love for the subject. I hope this joy will come through the Zoom call and our classroom activities so that they will be excited to read and write as well. Reading and writing is a skill that every person will need throughout their lifetime. It is my goal as a teacher to make the learning of these skill enjoyable and exciting.
I look forward to having the opportunity to teach your child!
