Ever since the discovery of Herculaneum in 1738 and Pompeii in 1748 the fascination with ancient lost cities has fueled public imagination. The quest for fortunate and glory led many Victorian explorers on quests for fabled cities swallowed by a jungle or long hidden by earthquakes, floods, or volcanoes. The fascination of lost cities has been the subject of many novels, movies, and even video games. The discovery of some of the lost civilizations continue to amaze us. In this class...
Students will learn about ancient lost cities and some of the major archaeological discoveries of the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries. Students will learn about the factors that lead to the rise and fall of ancient civilizations. Students will learn how these sites were rediscovered and how they have influence modern archaeology.
I am a professional archaeologist for over 20 years that has worked at sites throughout the United States and the world. I am currently the tribal archaeologist for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. I also teach archaeology/anthropology classes at Sitting Bull College and am a historic interpretive guide at On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, North Dakota. I have been engaged in teaching youth about the science of archaeology since AD 2000.
