"Kit has grown up on the island of Barbados, love and pampered by her grandfather. But after his death, Kit must leave. It's not proper for a sixteen-year-old girl to live by herself. She's heard stories about her aunt and uncle who live in the colony of Connecticut. These are the only relatives Kit knows of. So, alone and desperate, she sets sail to live with them in New England.

"When she arrives, Kit is shocked by the grey, damp landscape, but even more stunned by the Puritanical lifestyle of her uncle's household. Fitting in is not easy - unit she meets Hannah Tupper, an older woman who lives by alone and is the only person who lets Kit be herself.

"But the colonists believe Hannah is a witch. If they discover Kit is her friend, they will think the same of her. Kit must choose: should she abandon her only friend, or stand by her and risk losing everything?" - Citation provided at the bottom of the class description!

In this historical fiction novel study, students will have the opportunity to do a historical study of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts (and New England in general) through a study of women's roles in a Puritan society. Students will engage with one another through discussion, debate, historical study, women's study, art analysis, and literary analysis. Below is the schedule that we will be following during class. Please make note that while we will be talking about the Puritan religion, I will not be teaching religion. We will strictly be speaking about the historical and cultural events that led up to the Salem Witch trials and the effects that they had on the people living in the New World. Please let me know if you have any questions!

其他詳情

父母的引導和規範
Here is the Common Sense Media parental guide for the novel! - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/the-witch-of-blackbird-pond The novel covers several different sensitive topics including the misrepresentation of indigenous peoples, Black slaves, and women as seen in older societies. We will also look at the idea of discrimination based on race and ethnicity, gender, and even religion. During class, we will spend time discussing these misrepresentations and discuss why they are inappropriate. We will look at how these misrepresentations affect the story, history, and development of the United States as we see it today. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to reach out with any concerns that they have with the topics that we cover.

I have taught many book studies in my professional career including The Witch of Blackbird Pond through private tutoring, classic novel choice courses, and public school education. I love taking part in discussions and ensuring that the students' needs and interests are met as they read which is why every project has personalized options. I also have a degree in Secondary Education - English, but I have a minor in Gender Studies and an emphasis in Gender Studies with Theory.
