Have you ever heard of the Night Witches? History almost forgot them—but once you know their story, you won’t. In this class, we’ll uncover the daring legacy of the only all-female combat flying regiment of World War II. Feared by the German army and flying under cover of darkness, these women became legends—not just for their skill, but for their sheer determination in the face of adversity. We’ll dive into how this remarkable regiment came to be, the challenges they faced as female soldiers in a male-dominated military, and the unconventional tactics that made them so effective—and so feared. You’ll meet Marina Raskova, the woman often called the "Soviet Amelia Earhart," and learn how she helped make history in a cockpit. From flying outdated, hand-me-down planes to completing over 30,000 night missions, the Night Witches’ story is one of resilience, ingenuity, and grit. We’ll also take a broader look at the role of women aviators across other Allied countries and see how their experiences compared to those of their Soviet counterparts. By the end of class, you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation of these trailblazing women—and the legacy they carved into the skies.
