In this class we will be taking a look at the different types of word problems (single step vs multiple step), the language used in word problems and the strategy of using models (bar/tape diagrams) to effectively solve a word problem. This is a discussion based course so students should be prepared to talk about math. As a bonus the skills taught are underlying concepts in beginning algebra (this is an indirect correlation so no algebra understanding is necessary). This class is ideal for students currently in 5th to 7th grade.

*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.
I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.
