In this one-time class we will look at the pagan festivals that took place as the Celtic people welcomed the return of spring to the British Isles after the long, dark winter. Come and find out how Imbolc (the first spring festival) and then Beltane were celebrated in the four nations of the British Isles, with fires, food and rituals to encourage health, wealth and a good season for growing crops. We will also look at La Na Caillich, April Fool's Day, well dressing, Jack-in-the-Green, maypole dancing and several egg-y traditions! My classes are friendly and relaxed, with plenty of time for learners to add their thoughts and comments as we go along. I use lots of images and maybe even a few moments of a video clip (to show maypole dancing or Jack-in-the-Green), but this class is much more discussion-based than lecture-style. I would also love to find out how learners may celebrate any spring festivals themselves. I aim to be inclusive; if your learner has additional needs, please do let me know - I will do my best to adapt my class and teaching so they can enjoy it too. If you would like this class scheduled at a different time, just get in touch; I may be able to help. Please note this class may mention Easter customs, but does not discuss Easter from a religious point of view.
學習目標
Students will have an understanding of the origins and traditions of a range of spring festivals from the UK.
