In this 1:1 class, learners will master how to read common irregularly spelled words using their decoding skills rather than memorizing whole words. The heart word method is based on the science of reading, which helps students map words in their brain in the same way they map decodable words - through orthographic mapping! Each session, learners will review previously taught words, and they will learn new words by identifying the sounds they can decode and learning the parts of the word that do not follow spelling rules. At the end of each class, students will have heart word cards that they can use to practice their heart words at home. This approach is perfect for all students, especially those who struggle with memorizing whole words and early readers who are unsure of how to approach irregular high frequency words.
