During this class, students will learn how to read closely using the suspenseful text “The Escape” by JB Stamper. We will first discuss what it means to complete a close read of the text. I will read the entire text aloud with learners while displaying each chunk on a slide show. While reading, we will stop periodically to discuss vocabulary, make predictions, cite evidence, ask questions and talk about the text, as well as reflect on the ending of the story. Students will improve their understanding of close reading a text.
I have been teaching middle school Reading and Language Arts for more than 18 years. I specialize in reading skills/strategies and working with students at their own individual levels.
Paper and pencil will be needed for this course.
The main character is a prisoner. The story is not in any way graphic or detailed regarding this and does not discuss his crime or have any violence whatsoever.
