Discover what Meriwether Lewis and William Clark saw as they traveled through the Louisiana Territory in 1804. Join me as we meet Lewis and Clark and the members of their expedition. Using select entries from their journals, we'll learn about places they visited and wildlife they documented. The journey had challenges and many new experiences for the members of the Corps of Discovery who set out in 1804 and returned home in 1806. During our class, we will use maps, on-line journals of Lewis and Clark, Google slides and pictures to understand what this experience was like in the early 1800's. Cultural misrepresentations or stereotypes presented in the selected journal entries will be discussed in an educated and respectful manner. Learners will gain an understanding of the land and wildlife that were seen on this trip. Many Native American people, including members of the Lakota, Mandan, Shoshone, and Nez Perce tribes, inhabited the land Lewis and Clark traveled through on their expedition. Members of these tribes still live in these areas today. The role of Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman, was instrumental in the journey of Lewis and Clark as she was familiar with the land they crossed and she had connections to members of the Shoshone tribe. By the end of the class, each learner will have created a map of the expedition and their own journal entry modeled after the Lewis and Clark journal entries. Get ready for your new adventure learning, exploring and creating together! Week 1 - Introduction to Lewis and Clark and the Goals of Their Journey During the first week, we will meet Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Through Google slides and primary sources, learners will understand who these famous men were, the team of people they traveled with, and why President Thomas Jefferson sent them on this expedition. Week 2 - Heading West During week 2, learners will become familiar with the journals of Lewis and Clark by reading selected entries from their journey west. As they read, learners will complete a teacher created worksheet highlighting the importance and findings in the journals to share with classmates. Together, we'll create a map of the path westward. Week 3 - The Journey Continues During week 3, learners will continue to read selected entries from the journals of Lewis and Clark and document what they find to discuss with the class. The map of the journey will continue to be filled in with new locations and information. Week 4- Return Trip and Legacy During week 4, learners will read selected journal entries from the trip back East in 1806. We will complete our map and learners will share their own journal entries modeling the journaling method they learned from Lewis and Clark.
