課堂經歷
The Book Thief is considered to be a brilliant book for students to explore the historical context of the rise of Nazi Germany and the experiences of World War Two. Told from the perspective of death, the book has engaged readers for many years. "It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still. By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found. But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down. In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time." Summary from Goodreads.com. In our class, students will have the opportunity to read and discuss the book, The Book Thief. This book will have even the most reluctant readers engaged in the story and wanting to participate in the discussion. In each class, the teacher will provide relevant background information in relation to the setting of the novel and lead a discussion of the book. Through the discussion, we will explore the plot, character development, themes, symbols, and other literary devices. We will then complete the learning activity for that class. Some of these activities include creating a character development map, a journal entry, free-style writing, etc. Please note that the book is considered appropriate for learners 12 and up. The book contains descriptions of war, violence, death, and Anti-Semitism. Please be advised of these content warnings. I will be addressing such issues through an educational and trauma-informed approach.
