Learn how to bake the perfect French Apple Pie from scratch, including a melt-in-your-mouth homemade crust! 
In this class, we will be making everything from scratch including two kinds of crust; a traditional rolled crust for the bottom of the pie and a sweet, crunchy French crumb for the top crust. 

Class Instruction will include:

- demonstration and discussion of mixing tools and techniques
- demonstration and discussion of rolling out pie dough
- demonstration of peeling and cutting fruit for the filling
- preparing French crumb topping
- assembling the pie and preparing for baking
- discussion of proper oven usage and safety

I will model the process of preparing the pie dough, apple filling, French crumb topping, and assembling the pie in my own kitchen as the student follows along while making their own delicious creation. This class is highly interactive and I encourage learners to ask questions along the way. As I teach, I strive to explain why we do things a certain way, or use certain ingredients, rather than just showing the process. Having this knowledge will build your student's baking and cooking skills!
The class will conclude with each student putting their beautiful pie in the oven. Baking time is about 1 hour so make sure the student has time to monitor the baking process after class concludes.

Limited parental supervision is required for this class since we will be using the oven and handling sharp cutting utensils.

Limited parental supervision is required for this class since we will be using sharp cutting utensils including a knife and vegetable peeler. Students will also be using the oven at the end of class to bake their pie. Allergy Disclaimer: This recipe contains gluten and dairy. Dairy may be substituted out by omitting the butter and using all-vegetable shortening in the crusts. Attendance Reminder: Please note that Outschool policy is that all students on camera and participating in class must be enrolled in the class. If any other learners are present on camera or participating I will have to remove all learners from the classroom until only the learner(s) enrolled are present. These policies are put in place by Outschool for the safety of all learners. Thank you for your cooperation!

Required Recipe Ingredients: 
(exact amounts will be sent along with the recipe upon enrollment)
6-8 Gala apples (or other apples you enjoy)
granulated white sugar
brown sugar
all-purpose flour
salt
cinnamon
butter and/or shortening
powdered sugar
large sugar crystals (optional)

Other Required Equipment:
8 or 9-inch pie pan 
2 mixing bowls
measuring cups/spoons
rubber spatula or spoon
rolling pin
pastry blender/cutter- $5 (available at Walmart or most major grocery stores)
(2 forks will do in a pinch but the process will be much more time-consuming. I highly recommend having the pastry blender for class.)

I have been baking for over 30 years and specialize in creating delicious pies, breads, and cookies. I have provided professional-grade desserts, pies and cake pops for many birthdays, graduations, baby/wedding showers, and community celebrations. 

I am a graduate of the University of California at San Diego with a degree in Political Science. My teaching experience includes homeschooling my own two children for 18 years.  I also have been teaching online for the past 5 years.
Fun fact about me: I began baking on my own as a latch-key kid in the 80's. Many of my first attempts were completely inedible!
Now, after many years of experience and perfecting my craft, I'm excited to share my passion for baking with young learners!
