This class is a hybrid class, offering decoding/spelling skills from the Lindamood Bell "Seeing Stars" program, and reading comprehension skills from the "Visualize Verbalize" program.  A private class may be tailored to include any or all of these areas, based on your child's needs. 

Many students who could benefit from Lindamood Bell's center based programs are often unable due to the high cost. This class offers the opportunity for your student to be able to access this level of intervention at a reasonable cost. It is designed as an individual class for one learner to get targeted intervention at their own level with an experienced teacher.

The Lindamood Bell "Seeing Stars" program is a research based intensive intervention program. 
This class will target the following reading skills:

- Sequencing & recalling the order of letters while decoding and/or spelling 
- The "Slient E" Rule
- Long vs. Short vowel sounds
- Spelling for vowel combinations: ai, ea, oa, ay, etc.
- Spelling for vowel combinations: oi, oy, ow, ou, aw, au
- Spelling for combinations: ar, er, ir
- Blending and fluency while reading

Students will learn the foundational skills of blending these combinations of letters, while exercising their "symbol imagery" (visual memory.) 

The "Visualize Verbalize" program will address the following skills:

* Creating a mental image for words and sentences that are presented in print.
* Understanding text one sentence at a time.
* Answering both simple and more complex comprehension questions by accessing the mental images that they have created.

Visualize Verbalize is a targeted reading intervention for comprehension that was designed by Lindamood Bell. Children who have difficulty creating mental images when they read often have a weakness in reading comprehension, oral language comprehension, and may even struggle with verbal skills, and critical thinking.

Each lesson will be tailored to the needs of the learner and may be a combination of activities. 
Although this class is listed as once weekly for 4 weeks, reading intervention may be an ongoing process that takes a few months in order for the student to be confident in the skills practiced. Follow up sessions may be advised.

As a special education teacher for 20 years, I have been using the Lindamood Bell techniques for decoding, comprehension, and math. The Lindamood Bell method combines auditory, visual, and language skills for a comprehensive approach for the struggling learner.
