30-Minute Class on Open Syllables: What Your Child Will Learn
In this lesson, your child will be introduced to open syllables, a basic but important concept in phonics that helps with reading and spelling.
What are Syllables
The teacher will begin by explaining that open syllables are ones that end with a vowel sound. This "opens" the syllable and causes the vowel in the syllable to make the long  sound (e.g., A,E,I,O,U).
Examples will be given, such as "even”, “virus”, and “motel”. Your child will split the syllables and hear the long vowel sounds.
Identifying open syllables
Your child will practice recognizing open syllables in words. They'll be given a list of words and will mark them as closed, vowel R, and open. 
This helps develop their ability to spot short and long vowel sounds as well as vowel R sounds and identify patterns in words.
Reading and Practicing
After identifying open syllables, your child will practice reading simple words with closed, vowel R, and open syllables. For example, they might read pardon, summer, regret, baking, farmer ect. 
They will also participate in a fun activity where they clap for each syllable in the words, reinforcing the rhythm and structure of closed, vowel r, and open syllables.
Throughout the lesson we will play a digital board game together to build their confidence in this skill. 
By the end of the lesson, your child will have a better understanding of open syllables, which is an essential skill for improving reading fluency and spelling.
