There isn't much that is better on a hot summer day than cool, refreshing SCIENCE...Oh, wait...I mean ice cream. In this class students will learn the chemistry that makes ice cream possible. This is a hands on class in which positive connections can me made with learning science and making ice cream. We will discuss three states of matter, solutions vs. mixtures, and physical and chemical changes. Students will learn and discuss how these topics help make ice cream possible. Students will interact with the teacher and other classmates as we learn and make our sweet summer treats. Students will also practice measuring and mixing of chemicals (ice cream ingredients). There is no prior knowledge necessary as this class will cover the very basics. Please note: If your student has allergies, find safe alternative ingredients. Feel free to reach out to me and we can work together to find alternative ingredients.

By the end of the class students will be able to explain the basics of three states of matter, solutions vs. mixtures, and physical and chemical changes through the process of making ice cream.

measuring cup, measuring spoons 1 cup half-and-half (can use heavy cream or whole milk) 2 table spoons of sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 5 cups of ice 3/4 cup of rock salt (can use table salt, rock salt works best) 1 one gallon zip top bag 2 quart sized zip top bags toppings or other add-ins of your choice ex: mini chocolate chips, cut up fruit, crushed Oreo cookies kitchen towel and rag to clean up any spills.

Hello! My name is Faith Miller. I am a Science and STEM teacher who is passionate about learning and making learning meaningful and fun! I offer a variety of Science and STEM related courses from one time classes to semester long classes. I have a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Instructional Technology as well as STEM certifications through PLTW. My educational background and different teaching experiences allow me to be the best teacher that I can be. I believe that all students are capable of learning and thriving when they find their passion. It is important to understand that everyone learns differently and teachers must work to find what works best for each student. Learning should be fun! In my spare time I enjoy photography, spending time with my family and pets.
