In this 5-day book camp, learners will explore The Giver by Lois Lowry through guided discussions, creative responses, and thoughtful group activities. We'll focus on major themes such as memory, individuality, choice, and the structure of utopian/dystopian societies. Each session is centered around a key concept from the novel. We’ll begin by examining the world Jonas lives in and how it functions, then explore the role of memory, the meaning of sameness, and the cost of comfort and control. Activities include writing prompts, ethical dilemmas, visual symbolism projects, and opportunities for learners to share their interpretations. Class sessions are live and discussion-based. I guide learners through focused questions, collaborative exercises, and whole-group conversations. Learners will engage in both individual and group work. Examples include designing their own controlled community, writing from another character’s point of view, and reflecting on the role of memory in shaping identity. My teaching style is structured, supportive, and discussion-driven. I use slides to introduce topics or visuals when helpful, but most of our time is spent thinking, creating, and engaging as a group. Learners are encouraged to express their thoughts, ask questions, and reflect on the book’s deeper meaning. Learners should read The Giver prior to or alongside camp. We won’t read the novel in class, but learners should be familiar with its major events and characters. Each session ends with time to reflect, share insights, or complete a light activity that ties back to the day’s theme. By the end of the week, learners will have gained a deeper understanding of The Giver and its complex themes, while building confidence in sharing their ideas and interpreting literature beyond the surface.
學習目標
Learners will analyze key themes in The Giver, such as memory, individuality, and societal control.
Learners will develop and express their interpretations through discussion, writing, and creative projects.

父母的引導和規範
This class is based on The Giver by Lois Lowry, a dystopian novel that includes mature themes such as euthanasia, emotional suppression, and societal control. These topics are explored in a sensitive and age-appropriate way, but families should be aware that the story raises ethical questions that may be unsettling to some learners.
Select images or short video clips from approved film adaptations (rated PG-13) may be used to support discussion and visual understanding. All clips will be brief, relevant, and carefully chosen for classroom appropriateness.
No third-party accounts are required. Google Slides or Google Docs may be used during class, and learners will access materials through shared links provided by the teacher. Parents are encouraged to review the novel in advance if they have concerns about the content.

教師專業知識和證書
I hold a Master’s degree in Education and two Bachelor’s degrees in English and Communications, with over 20 years of teaching experience across a wide range of age groups—from preschool through university-level learners. I’ve taught middle and high school English, led creative writing workshops, and worked as a professional writing tutor at the university level.
Much of my classroom experience has centered around literature analysis, critical thinking, and helping students connect with texts on a deeper level. The Giver has been one of the most powerful novels I’ve used in class discussions, and I’ve taught it in both small-group settings and full classrooms. My approach encourages learners to explore literature not just as a story, but as a lens for understanding human behavior, ethics, and society.
In addition to my academic background, I’ve spent years designing engaging and age-appropriate enrichment courses, including book clubs and writing camps, that emphasize connection, creativity, and conversation. I specialize in creating a classroom environment that supports learners at all levels and invites them to think critically while having meaningful dialogue about the material.
