課堂經歷
The first time I saw a Studio Ghibli film I was blown away at how different it was from the American animated movies I'd seen before. These films often deal with stories about humans and nature. They look at how we effect our environment and what we can learn from observing the natural world. We will use our class time to talk about the movie and the story elements. Each class is a film appreciation & social time for students. Students should come prepared each week to engage in a great discussion, led by the instructor. Film screenings take place outside of class time. Students should write down their thoughts during or after the screening and bring them to class. Outside of film screenings, no prior knowledge or experience is required. Students can come and go from this ongoing class as their interests or schedule allow. Our class will be structured as follows: - Introductions from me and between students - Sharing our first thoughts about the movie - Guided film discussion - Historical background on cultural elements - Reflection, feedback, and a tease for the upcoming film Summer Schedule (films should be watched BEFORE we meet) 06/15 - My Neighbor Totoro 06/22 - Kiki's Delivery Service 06/28 - Ponyo 07/06 - The Secret World of Arietty 07/13 - The Cat Returns 07/20 - Spirited Away

I will be avoiding some of the more intense Ghibli films (Princess Mononoke) but there may be light violence present. In My Neighbor Totoro there is a scene where the father is bathing with his daughters. This is a great opportunity to talk about cultural differences and customs.

Students will watch all movies outside of our classtime. You can rent or purchase these movies digitally through platforms like iTunes or Amazon. All the films we watch will be available to stream on HBO Max if your household subscribes to that service. You should also check out your local library as they may have these movies available.
