In this class, we will study the history and mythology and legends of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark and gain all the benefits of travel from the comfort of our own homes. Students in this class will learn facts about history and culture through the lens of popular myths and legends. Your child will learn to apply concepts from the core subjects of social studies, history, and literature. At the end of the lesson, we will develop critical thinking skills by discussing which character, story, or creature each student found most interesting and why, followed by an analysis of what each character or creature tells us about the region, the people who live there, and those who lived there many centuries ago.

We will start with a brief overview of what "Scandinavia" means! We will include Norway, Sweden, and Denmark and learn about history, concentrating on important events that have shaped the people and society of these countries with an emphasis on the history of Vikings. Next, students will hear stories that define the culture and traditions of Scandinavia. We will focus on the locations of each of these stories and their lasting importance and influence. We close with students sharing and discussing their favorite story or figure from class.

This is a stand-alone class and no previous knowledge or work is necessary.
