In this 8-week semester class, we will use children’s picture books to learn some basic social skills such as asking for help, accepting “no” for an answer, and calming oneself down. The following eleven social skills will be taught throughout the course. By Mo Willems Week 4: Showing Appreciation The Thank You Book by Mo Willems Week 5: Asking for Help Mr. Putter & Tabby Catch the Cold by Cynthia Ryland Week 6: Taking Turns I Really Want to Be First by Harriet Ziefert Week 7: Including Others The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig Week 8: Apologizing Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes The class will be teacher-led and student-focused. At the beginning of each class, I will introduce the social skill we will be learning that day. I’ll give learners a chance to talk about what they already know about this skill. Then I will introduce and read the picture book. During and after the reading, I’ll facilitate a discussion about how the social skill was or was not demonstrated in the book. Then we will take a few minutes to practice the skill with one another. We will also review past social skills. I will use developmentally appropriate language so that learners will not need much prior knowledge.

Learners will begin to see how their lives connect to the stories they read.
