This course offers an in-depth exploration of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, a landmark work that catalyzed the modern environmental movement. Students will learn about the history and science behind pesticide use, ecological systems, and the environmental and health impacts of human activity. Each chapter provides opportunities to analyze literary devices, ethical arguments, and scientific concepts, while connecting the book’s themes to contemporary environmental issues. Topics Covered: Ecological interconnectedness Environmental ethics and conservation History and effects of pesticide use Biodiversity and ecosystem health Advocacy and public policy in environmental science Class Structure: The course is divided into 17 weekly sessions, each dedicated to one chapter of the book. Each week includes: 1. Pre-reading activities to introduce key themes. 2. Instructor-led lectures (15-20 minutes) with slides or video clips. 3. Group discussions to analyze the chapter's content and relevance. 4. Interactive activities such as debates, case studies, or games. 5. Reflections and journaling for students to process their thoughts. Teaching Style: My teaching style is student-centered and highly interactive. I combine short lectures with multimedia tools, encourage open discussion, and foster critical thinking through real-world applications. Lessons are structured to build connections between literature, science, and personal responsibility, ensuring students stay engaged and motivated. Interaction with Learners: Students will interact with me extensively through weekly discussions, one-on-one feedback on reflections and assignments, and collaborative activities. We’ll use video clips and slides to provide context, play games to reinforce learning, and participate in hands-on projects such as researching local environmental issues or presenting solutions to modern problems. Learners will have opportunities to ask questions, share opinions, and receive personalized guidance throughout the course.

With over 20 years of experience teaching in the science classroom, I bring a deep understanding of environmental issues and educational strategies to a high school book study on Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. For several years, I have taught an environmental science class that incorporates Silent Spring into its curriculum each semester, allowing me to develop a nuanced approach to exploring its themes and scientific concepts with students. My extensive experience enables me to guide discussions on the book’s historical significance, ecological principles, and its relevance to contemporary environmental challenges, fostering critical thinking and meaningful engagement among students.
