課堂經歷
Sight words are an essential part of early childhood reading and writing. Many sight words are not easily decodable. But even when they are, all sight words are found in texts so often that knowing how to easily read and spell them allows children to focus their energy on other words that are not as familiar. Even the youngest children can benefit from sight word exposure. Some children will learn sight words easily, while others will need repeated exposure. This class is for all children. Each week we will explore one, sometimes two new sight words. We will look closely at the word, discuss any tricky sounds, read, chant, and tap to spell the word. I will variously use movement, worksheets, text, visual aids, and slides to help teach the new word. After class, I will send optional worksheets and/or activity ideas for the students to complete. This will help reinforce the new sight word. I will be pulling from Dolch sight word lists. For class, children should have a marker or dark crayon, pencil, dry erase board, and markers ready. If you do not have a dry erase board, no worries, please just have some colors and paper ready. Education is my passion. I hold an MA in Curriculum and Teaching: Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. My career has included teaching preschool, kindergarten, first and second grade, in both public and private schools. I spent a couple of years home schooling my children, and hope to do so again in the future. Dyslexia runs in my family and recently my oldest daughter was diagnosed with mild dyslexia at the age of 12. She was denied services. I have recently been trained by an Orton-Gillingham Academy Fellow at the Associate level. I am continuing my studies in understanding dyslexia and how to help remediate it by also studying Structured Word Inquiry. I believe my role as a teacher is to help guide children in their learning. My goal is not to just teach important educational skills but also to help children build a strong, foundational love of learning as well as understand their weaknesses are sometimes also their strengths.
My classes are designed to help each child reach their potential. I create classes that will keep the little ones moving, motivated and, excited to learn. For the older students, I like to open their world to different ideas. I like creating classes that explore connections within different subjects. You will find many of my older grade classes don't fit into one category. Often a class will include, history, etymology, and science all rolled into one!
I live outside of New York City with my husband, two daughters and mom. I look forward to meeting your learners!
