課堂經歷
In this class, it's the students against the teacher in a singing game called Forbidden Pattern. They will learn the Kodaly-based hand signs as well as how to demonstrate proper singing posture. For this class, you need a chair to sit in. Make sure you have a quiet work area without distractions. Avoid eating food or chewing gum during this class since we will be singing! This winter camp includes the first 4 lessons in a cumulative program that I offer on Outschool. By taking this class, your student is taking the first few steps on the S-Cubed Sight Singing Program for Beginners which I created over my 30 years of teaching public school. I began sharing the curriculum online a decade ago to help teachers who teach beginners. The program is used by teachers all over the world. When students complete the program, they will have the tools they need to sight sing music a capella with skips as wide as an octave and syncopated rhythms with no help from the teacher, and they will get some great ear-training as well. I plan to offer S-Cubed on Outschool in the multi-day class formats over the coming months and years. On the first day of class, your child will begin building the foundations toward becoming an excellent sight singer in the first lesson of the program in a single day class called "Sight Singing 101-The Game". The game is an integral part of helping the students learn and become comfortable using the Kodaly based hand signs, and we will play the game daily during the campe with the students continuing to try to beat me. In addition, we will begin using a technique called "Follow the Hand". This technique is going to help them prepare for reading real pitches off of the music staff accurately and confidently during Level 2. On day 3, we will start the process of ear-training which is a crucial part of singing well in general. Our ultimate goal with the ear-training is to help the students learn to self-assess and self-correct as quickly as possible while they sing. On day 4, students will use the game, Follow the Hand, and more ear-training and will end the camp by actually reading pitches off of the page a capella without any help from me...using the tools they've learned during the camp! What will be taught? Solfege hand signs, Ear training, pitch reading What topics will be covered? Solfege hand signs, Singing sharp, Singing flat, Singing in tune, pitch reading What is the class structure? We start each of the multi-day classes with the game Forbidden Pattern, followed by an exercise called Follow the Hand which is followed by Ear Training exercises. How will I teach? I will teach "live". Students will be singing. What is my teaching style? My teaching style is interactive. 3/4 cup learning + 1/4 Cup Fun = Success. That is the S-Cubed Philosophy! If your child enjoys this camp, I hope you will have them sign up for the future multi-day classes so they can start building their sight singing skills on the S-Cubed Sight Singing Journey! What type of interaction with students get with me? I lead and teach for the entire class through the games and activities. I teach from the time we are on screen until we sign off. What experience is required? Students must have completed the first lesson in the program called "Sight Singing 101-The Game" before signing up for this class.

*I am passionate about music, singing, performing, Broadway shows, and issues surrounding the LGBTQ+ community.
*My classes are designed for Homeschool teens and 'tweens and for students who are in school and are looking for enrichment.
I taught middle school students for 30 years. I taught up to 340 un-auditioned choral music and musical theater students annually during that time. I taught in North Carolina, New Jersey and in Georgia! After 30 years of teaching public school, I recently retired, and I am super excited to share my passions on Outschool with students all over the world.
In the choral music education world, I have established myself as an expert at teaching the true beginning musician how to read music at first sight a capella. I use games and competition (the students against ME!) to help the learning NOT to feel like learning! Building the skill sets to read music a capella at first sight is like building language skills, and it takes time...but I promise that even if you take a few classes and move on to something else, you are going to learn a lot and have a great time doing it! And if you stick with it until the end, you will have the tools you need to be able to read 2 part music a capella with skips as wide as an octave and syncopated rhythms.
My philosophy is 3/4 cup learning + 1/4 cup fun = SUCCESS! No matter what I teach, you will have a good time learning it.
I am super passionate about musical theater. I love to help students improve their auditions and learn new things about shows. I travel to New York City annually to see Broadway shows ...I love the new stuff! Over time, I may share some classes on Musical Theater and Audition techniques. I am a former National Aerobic Gymnastics Champion and former International FIG Judge for the sport of Aerobic Gymnastics, and I have judged all over the world! Korea...Japan...Austria...Czech Republic...Slovakia...France...Germany....Austria...Canada...and more! I may end up sharing classes about that stuff too!
I love my pets. I have a Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie mix) and a crazy Ragdoll kitty that I adore! They make me laugh and share their love each and every day! I am also obsessed with plants! I love watching them and helping them thrive and grow!
