For students who can't meet in my weekly live Vocabulary Workshops due to time zones or life in general, this is a weekly recap of the exact same words. This is for Week 170, taught the week of Oct. 2-7, 2023. A strong vocabulary benefits students in test preparation, written and oral expression, comprehension, and many other ways. All 10 words are taken from vocabulary lists from the ACT, SAT, TOEFL, and vocabulary lists from classic books. The Week 170 words are interlude, wallow, personify, endearing, circumlocution, complacency, arboreal, funereal, refractory, and paltry. Each class centers on a prerecorded video. In the video, students are introduced to the words in a fun and engaging format. I use numerous images and examples to explain the definition of each word. Students are encouraged to copy the definition on the included worksheet. In the second part of class, I go through the etymology, synonyms, and antonyms of each word (students should also copy down the latter two), and I give two sample sentences. Finally, the end part of class consists of various activities, usually including a photo prompt, a replace-the-word activity, multiple-choice questions commonly seen on standardized tests, and an examination of a particular word's etymology. Students also receive access to a Quizlet and a Nearpod activity to reinforce their retention.

學士學位 由 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities. For this class in particular, I bring my innate love of vocabulary and big, beautiful words!
On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
