This course will not disappoint your learner!! We are going to have a blast learning about science! This course includes 4 flex courses bundled into 1. The content will cover quarter 1 - 4 of 5th grade science. Learners can take this course to meet their 5th grade science standards and/or use it as a supplement to their current 5th grade comprehensive science curriculum. There will be two lesson each week and the recordings of each lesson will include Google Slides or Neapod, engaging videos supporting weekly content, handouts, doodle notes, hands-on learning activities and labs/experiments! I explain, teach and model all activities each week in all recordings. The activities will appeal to all learner styles! Labs are not required but participating in the labs is encouraged and learners will have a blast! It is crucial to foster a love for science in young learners so they want to continue developing their science skills for middle school and high school. Science matters and your learner will begin to enjoy science with this course! Learners can expect to spend approximately 20-40 minutes on each lesson, including the hands-on activities. Recordings will be posted in the Outschool classroom weekly and I'm available to meet live if requested. Quarter 1 Content (4 Weeks): Week 1: What is Science? and How Do Scientists Learn About the Natural World? Recordings will be posted in the Outschool classroom weekly and we will complete a Cotton Candy Lab & Pop Rocks Lab Week 2: How Can Scientists Learn from Observation? and Performing a Controlled Experiment & Lab Making observations and completing a Gummy Worm lab Week 3: What Objects Are Part of the Solar System? and How Do We Observe Objects in the Solar System? We will make a model of solar system and complete an alien project Week 4: What are Stars? and What are Galaxies? We will investigate stars through a glow stick lab activity and be making galaxy gookies Quarter 2 Content (4 Weeks): Week 5: States of Matter & Changes in Matter and Mixtures & Solutions Root beer float lab activity (includes making homemade ice cream) and an investigating mixtures and solutions lab activity Week 6: What Affects the Speed of Dissolving? and Atomic Theory & Atomic Structure We will complete a sugar cube dissolving lab and build atomic models Week 7: What Is Energy? and What Changes Can Energy Cause? Investigate energy through marble run lab and investigate changes in energy by completing a scavenger hunt Week 8: What is Electricity? (Static Electricity) and How Do We Use Electricity? We will explore static electricity through a lab and explore electricity by building circuits Quarter 3 Content (4 Weeks): Week 9: What are Forces? and How Do Forces Affect Motion? Explore how forces affect motion through mini labs that I will also demonstrate in the recording Week 10: Balanced and Unbalanced Forces and Lab We will complete lab activity exploring balanced and unbalanced forces and how they affect motion and make a marshmallow launcher to enforce the effects of forces on motion Week 11: What is the Water Cycle? and How Do We Measure Weather? We will complete a Nearpod and model the Water Cycle Week 12: Weather Patterns & Predicting Weather and Climate We will complete a Nearpod and play a virtual Blooket that will be posted in the Outschool classroom. Quarter 4 Content (4 weeks): Week 13: Organs & Body Systems and How Does the Body Stay Cool? We will view a presentation in the recording and complete an activity that demonstrates how the body stays cool? Week 14: How Does the Body Enable Movement, Support, Respiration and Circulation? and What is an Adaptation? Recorded Lessons will include a Nearpod and we will explore respiration through a lab activity that includes movement/dancing Week 15: Adaptations of Life on Land and in Water? and Bird Beak Adaptations We will create an organism with adaptations that can be on land or water and explore how different bird beaks are specific for different types of food Week 16: Environmental Changes and Their Effects on Organisms We will complete a Nearpod activity and a Blooket will be posted in the Outschool classroom to review how the environment affects organisms. The course will be extended if learners need longer, they can request an extension. If a learner prefers to only complete one lesson per week, the end of course date can be adjusted as well.

I am a certified teacher and I've been teaching middle school comprehensive science since 2014 and I taught 5th-grade science many years prior to moving to middle school. I also help design activities that support the 7th & 8th-grade curriculum for all of the science teachers and serve as a math and science instructional coach to K-5 elementary teachers. I will be incorporating reading and writing in this science course as well. I have a master's degree in reading and writing, and I am a firm believer in reading and writing in the content area.
