Course learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will be able to: 
 
- identify a topic and create a plan to research it
- find and evaluate sources for a topic
- understand the basics of reading a text critically
- identify and analyze arguments
- construct a thesis statement and arguments to support it with appropriate evidence
- understand and apply the fundamentals of essay development
- understand and apply the basics of academic style, formatting, and citation
- have a foundational understanding of qualitative research methods
- have a foundation for further development of critical thinking and writing skills
- have experience with project management and executive decision-making
About your instructor: Hi! My name is Leah, and I’m a Ph.D. student in Information Science with 4 years of teaching experience supporting first-year undergraduate students with their writing and research assignments. I’m a librarian, an information architect, and a copyeditor for an academic journal in Canada. I have a BA Specialization in Anthropology, as well as a Master of Library and Information Science.

As an educator, my passion is for mentoring people to prepare them for college-level work. I offer sessions in essay writing, editing, performing research for any topic, and how to search for and manage digital information.

There will be weekly exercises posted to our course classroom site for students to complete individually, designed to support understanding of the week's lesson. Students will submit a research proposal and a final research essay for the course, for which they will receive written feedback and a grade. As this is a research-based essay course, it is recommended that the student spend approximately 1-2 hours a week minimum reviewing the lessons and completing their weekly exercises in order to benefit from the experience of applying these concepts. During the last weeks of the course, students will be in the active writing phase of their final essay, and the amount of time spent can be expected to increase to 2-3 hours minimum per week.

Student evaluation: Each week short exercises will be posted on the course site to support learning of the week’s video lesson. These exercises will be completed individually and I will be posting coaching feedback on the site for students to reflect on. Students will be provided with a grading rubric for their final essay, and they will receive a grade and written feedback on their research proposal and essay submission with a discussion of how they did compared to the rubric and any tips they can use moving forward. Students will have up to one extra week following our last live class; this is why the number of meetings is actually 12, with Week 11 set aside to give students an extra week to submit the paper, and Week 12 to receive their feedback, no live meeting attendance is necessary after Week 10.
