This class was developed to help learners become more confident and capable communicators. This one-time class introduces learners to the idea of "conversational skills" in an age-appropriate manner.

Conversation is more than just "talking". There is both an art to it AND a science to it! The ability to converse with different types of people - and peers! - helps to improve social awareness, increase knowledge about the world around you, and build rapport with others, which is the building block of every social relationship!

Class structure:
-Introduction/Meet each other
-Class expectations ("how to do class")
-Topics taught
-Practice time

Topics covered:
-What makes a conversation?
-Why do we want to make a conversation?
-How do we make it? What is the "recipe"?
-Where can we use this recipe?
-Let's practice!

Teaching style:
-Warm
-Engaging
-Funny
-Encouraging
-Modeling rapport-building
-Nurturing

Interaction:
-Class is presented via slides
-Teacher talks to entire class, but will also engage one-on-one with learners during class
-Learners will have chance to interact with each other
-Shy learners will not be "forced" to talk, but will definitely be included and not ignored
-Multiple modes of participation are encouraged (speaking, thumbs up/down, chat messages) so learners can use what feels most comfortable to them
學習目標
The goals are:

-Removing the mystery from "how to make a conversation" by learning about social expectations, turn taking, and reciprocity
-Gaining skills in how to have a conversation
-Understanding why conversation is important

Suzanne holds an M.A. in Education - Speech-Language Pathology, and a B.A. in Linguistics (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Campuswide Honors Program, Linguistics Honors Program), with an emphasis in Sociolinguistics and secondary emphases in Applied Linguistics and Historical Linguistics. She is a speech-language pathologist, an educator, and a parent of three kids with various special learning and health needs. She is also a twice-exceptional/NAT individual. In high school, she was on drill/dance team and in theatre, belonged to a slew of clubs, played in two string ensembles, was an award-winning creative writer, and was a National Merit Commended Scholar.

She has experience (as a professional, a parent, or a volunteer) across the full spectrum of education, including public school, private school (secular, Christian, International Baccalaureate), homeschool, homeschool co-op, online school, de-schooling, mainstream education, special education, special day class, Deaf/HOH schools, and day care. She is familiar with a variety of curricula and has also developed her own curricula. She has approximately 20 years of experience as speech-language pathologist, and has been volunteering in schools since she was a fifth grader (more years ago than she'll admit). She has dedicated her life to lifting children up and supporting their educational and socio-emotional needs.

In her spare time - when she has any - she is a performer (dance production, modeling, on-screen acting), manages her daughter's acting career, reads voraciously, plays multiple instruments, goes to the gym, tends to her garden, slays at real estate investing, and takes walks with her dog (who sometimes shows up on camera in class) and her husband.
