Class Experience

The goal of this class is to help struggling readers develop a solid decoding foundation to prepare them to learn advanced phonics. This program will help readers who still need to sound out cvc words, words with digraphs, 4&5 sound words with blends, words with endings and more. Readers should be able to read all decodable words fluently and easily - without sounding them out and without sound errors.

In this class I will be sharing a lot of strategies and ideas to help struggling readers. Your child may not need all of the strategies or materials provided in this class - I am including A LOT of material and resources in this one class!! My goal is to provide help and support to as many families as possible in this class. Please use the strategies and materials that are helpful to your child, and then just leave the rest. (or use the other ideas with another child in your family that has slightly different reading struggles)

The strategies and resources included in this class are:

1. Ideas for learners who struggle with their vowel sounds. Many learners "know" their vowel sounds, but when reading words or stories, they still get them mixed up.

2. Strategies to help learners learn their b & d's. Such tricky letters to master.

3. A "treasure chest" of decodable word review lists that will be super helpful in helping your learner master reading cvc words, words with blends, digraphs, silent e's and 2 syllable words. Mastering the ability to read these words fluently is a necessary foundation to be able to read words with advanced phonics. If this basic area remains weak, then most likely, the learner will continue to have reading struggles as they continue with bigger and more complex words. My goal with this class is to help your learner build a SOLID foundation of reading skills, so that they can read all decodable words fluently and easily - without sounding them out and without sound errors.

4. In addition to the "treasure chest" of word review lists - I have also included DOZENS of stories that are perfect for your child to practice and master. These stories are mostly decodable and therefore a perfect fit for struggling readers.

5. I will also be sharing some information about how brain integration therapy and nutrition/supplements can be very helpful for struggling readers. Many struggling readers benefit from some simple nutritional changes to their diet and/or adding some supplements for a short time to help build a healthier gut and brain. I am not an expert in this area, but I will share a few ideas and refer you to experts who know more about this area than I do. If you are not interested pursuing this option, then please just skip that part of the class.

Daily reading/decoding practice is necessary to help a bright, struggling learner grow in their reading abilities.

I recommend having your child practice their decoding skills with the word lists for 15-20 minutes, 5 days a week. Please sit with your child and listen to them/correct them when they make an error.

After decoding, please have your child practice reading decodable stories. It could be from the ones I've included in this class, or other stories - as long as they are decodable and not including multisyllable words, silent e words or advanced phonics. I recommend having your child read orally/out loud to you for 10 minutes, 5 days/week.

And finally, practice weak vowel and letter sounds for approximately 2-3 minutes with the strategy described in the class video.

So, a total of about 30 minutes of reading WITH your child five days/week. A very simple and helpful plan to follow.

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions.
