⭐ This is an ongoing course that students can join at any time and jump right in! This skill workshop will meet 1x/week for 30 minutes. In this level 2 reading workshop, students will practice the 6 layers of phonemic awareness skills essential to reading as they read and build new words in class. These skills increase in difficulty from 1-6. Class structure: We will follow these 6 layers of phonemic awareness skills on 3 "starter block" words per class. The steps will allow students to use the 3 "starter block" words to read, break apart, and manipulate letters to make as many new words as we can together! 🧱🧱🧱 "STARTER BLOCKS" 🧱🧱🧱 (March 19th, 2024) Week 1: 🧱 bat, fin, tone* long vowels/silent e* | vowels: a, i, e, o (March 26th, 2024) Week 2: 🧱 top, hut, sick* digraph [ck]* | long vowels/silent e | vowels: o, u, i, a (April 2nd, 2024) Week 3: 🧱 ham, log, bell* double letters [ll]* | long vowels/silent e | vowels: a, o, e, u (April 9th, 2024) Week 4: 🧱 map, get, see* double letter [ee]* | long vowels/silent e | vowels: a, e, o, u (April 16th, 2024) Week 5: 🧱 rid, grub, crop* consonant blends: [gr] [cr]* | vowels: i, u, o, a | long vowels/silent e (April 23rd, 2024) Week 6: 🧱 kit, rob, too*, tooth* vowel pattern: [oo]* | digraph [th]* | vowels: i, o, a, [ee] (April 30th, 2024) Week 7: 🧱 nod, got, pack*, too, all digraph [ck]* | vowel pattern [oo] | double letter [ll] | long vowels/silent e | vowels: a, o, i, e (May 7th, 2024) Week 8: 🧱 bad, moss, cart* double letter [ss] | [ar]* "bossy r" words | consonant blend [cl] | vowels: a, o (May 14th, 2024) Week 9: 🧱 tag, old, path* digraph [th]* | consonant blend [ld] | vowels: a, o, e (May 21st, 2024) Week 10: 🧱 must, or*, trip* consonant blend [st] | [or]* "bossy r" words | consonant blend [tr]* ***Challenge blocks*** Students will learn and practice using the challenge reading-sound pattern (silent e, consonant blends, double letters, digraphs) to decode and build more challenging words that use that same pattern. Students will be exposed to all the reading skills, both target and challenge, as listed under each week's 3 starter blocks. 🧱🧱 WORD BUILDING 1) phoneme isolating: ex: "What is the first/middle/last sound we hear in the word bat?" 2) blending: blending individual letter sounds in words together to form a word. 3) segmenting: breaking apart the sounds in words to determine the letters and spelling. 4) adding: adding letters and sounds to different parts of words to form new words. 5) deleting: removing letters and sounds from different parts of words to form new words. 6) substituting: removing letters and sounds from different parts of words and replacing them with new letters and sounds to form new words. ✅ Examples of new words we will make together from our "starter block" words, using the 6 layers of phonemic awareness: bath, sat, fine, meet, math, win, stop, tooth, ton, stone, one, art, chart, card, pick, stick, class. ⭐ Letter and sound manipulation while decoding words is one of the best ways to improve student's fluency! (Strategies used in this class are similar to: Wonders, Heggerty, Orton-Gullingham) 🔁 Skills will loop back around and letters will slightly change in the next loop of 10 starter blocks, 3 block sets, while keeping the same learning goals. *This workshop is designed for learners who are at an intermediate learning-to-read level, level 2. Students should have existing knowledge of alphabet letter names, sounds, CVC three letter words, and CVCe/CCVC/CVCC words (e.g. cat, gum, bike, crab, wish, band). --> For students that need level 3, please check out the upcoming level 3 skill workshop course "Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension." 🔑This word building skill workshop is the full course to the Winter workshop preview given in December 2023.
學習目標
Students will understand the relationships and patterns between words as they use the six layers of phonemic awareness skills to decode and manipulate letters in words to build new words.

Hi! I'm Ms. Chapman and I have spent the past 8 years teaching school-aged children how to read! I have incorporated individualized educational plan strategies, behavioral therapy strategies, and public school strategies to create as realistic-as-possible fun and engaging online reading class! I call myself a reading specialist, but you can just call me Ms. Chapman or Ms. C. I love to read and I will happily help your student learn to read, and hopefully they, too, will love reading one day! Either way, learning to read with me is always an experience that has allowed my students to better engage in their future classrooms and find success completing their next grade-level expectations in all subjects, in addition to English and Literature.
