課堂經歷
This interactive, conversational class will begin with a discussion of the purpose of setting reading goals. Why is reading important? How can goal setting change behavior? Do only struggling readers benefit from goals? Do adults ever set reading goals? Learners will evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses as a reader before deciding on a goal type. Some students will choose a goal based on reading more in general - minutes read, books completed, pages per night, etc. Others may choose a goal related to genre or a particular reading challenge they are facing. We will discuss the importance of making our goals SMART - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time Bound. Students will share their ideas with the group and we will work cooperatively to give feedback and support one another so that each learner leaves with a SMART goal. Learners will share about past goal setting experiences and obstacles that got in the way. Have you achieved every goal you’ve set? What caused you to struggle? What helped you succeed? I will share common pitfalls I’ve seen readers experience and we’ll problem solve through possible scenarios together. I will also share resources and habits that have been successful for other readers. Each learner will take notes on the purpose of the goal, potential obstacles, tips and tools to stay on track, and how to measure and celebrate success. They will also create a motivational poster for themselves to hang as a reminder of their new reading goal!

Hello there! I’m Ms. Davis. I’m here to talk books and help kids to discover (or celebrate!) a love for reading and writing! My classes are primarily discussion-based, but also include explicit instruction, hands on practice, and fun group activities. I offer writing classes that include plenty of social time to share work and connect with peers. I also teach reading classes and book clubs that fall somewhere between structured tutoring and just hanging with friends, talking books.
I’m a passionate and intentional teacher with significant experience teaching virtually, in private tutoring settings, and in a public school. I’m certified in Texas for early childhood through 6th grade with additional GT and ESL endorsements. I currently tutor students K-5 and have 8 years experience teaching grades PreK-4 in a public school.
One of my great strengths as a teacher is my enthusiasm for books and extensive knowledge of children’s literature. My mom is a librarian - and it shows! I love reading children's literature and have a long list of favorites. Recommending the right book at the right time for a student is one of my favorite parts of being an educator!
Another strength is my commitment to supporting and educating the whole child. I regularly integrate social and emotional learning into my classes and believe that learning to be a kind and confident person is as important as learning to read and write. Teaching is so much more than delivering content, it's supporting learners in becoming the best versions of themselves!
