This class will support elementary-aged students with extra reading practice to understand fiction and non-fiction texts better. Each session will focus on reading 1-2 short stories. or passages together, then answer comprehension questions to check for understanding of the text. Vocabulary words in the text will be discussed and we will use context clues to figure out unknown words. Each fiction story will focus on specific skills including setting, characters, plot, and problem/solution. Non-fiction stories will highlight text features and information learned about a particular topic. 
Some strategies used in class are:
 Activating and Using Background Knowledge ~ This strategy requires readers to activate their background knowledge and use it to help them understand what they are reading.
Generating and Asking Questions ~ This strategy involves making connections in three different ways: text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world.
