As a young adult, I fell in love with the Sherlock Holmes mysteries and carried that love into my upper elementary classroom as a reading group. I am excited to offer these discussion groups on Outschool and hope you will join me. During this ongoing class, we read one story per week (approximately 30 pages) and discuss the plot, characters, settings, and how Sherlock and Watson used their deductive reasoning to solve the case! I enjoy talking about the settings (historic London, 1880-1910), the clues, and the intriguing characters that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brilliantly brings to life. While the class focuses on comprehending the plot of the mystery, secondary objectives taught include vocabulary, inferring, predicting, and plot and character development. For over 20 years, I have read and discussed these classic tales with young learners, and I hope you will join me in solving these mysteries! The selected stories below are from two books from Puffin Publishers and are recommended for ages ten and up. I recommend that you do not buy the adult version and search for children's adaptations (I purchased the Kindle version and screen share during classes). The adapted versions are still complex texts for the suggested age level. The text includes vocabulary terms and plots that can be difficult to comprehend for struggling readers. I recommend an advanced fifth-grade or above reading level. I am a fun, exciting, engaging, patient, and understanding educator who enjoys teaching and learning. This attitude is evident in my classes! No boring teachers allowed! Jubilant Tutoring strives to offer all learners a safe, friendly, encouraging, growth-bound environment. My teaching strategy is to facilitate the group, leaving most of the discussion to the young learners and letting them take the wheel often. Sharing ideas, thoughts, and questions is highly encouraged, and piggybacking off others is often met with applause. I have practiced facilitating writing groups in the upper elementary school classroom for over 20 years and have mastered facilitating an enjoyable, fun, engaging, and educational learning group where positive attitudes rule and friendly smiles are abundant. Students will be expected to read and prepare for lively and exciting weekly discussions.
