This is a course for students who are comfortable playing the notes B, A, and G (left-hand fingerings) and may have had some exposure to using the right hand to play lower notes (not required). In each class meeting, we will practice playing new songs that involve a greater range of the instrument. Song in this class will use B, A, and G, and expand the student's playing range to include the next two higher pitches, C (third space on the staff) and D (fourth line on the staff). These notes,...

Mrs. Girouard has played in recorder ensembles in both college and community groups and has taught recorder to students for many years, both individually and in ensembles. She loves playing all types of recorders, although she mostly plays soprano and alto recorder.

The student will need a soprano recorder with Baroque fingering. Many soprano recorders are available very inexpensively. However, there are also some very poor quality recorders available in discount stores. Your child should practice each song a few times each day to build comfort with both how to blow through the recorder (not too hard, not too soft - we cover this in class), and finger placement. This can be as little as fifteen minutes per day. Focused in practice is more important than quantity of time at this point. Students should practice new songs first, then quickly review previously learned songs as well.
