Have you ever wondered if queer literature in the USA has an actual history? Sure, you can find books now with all sorts of queer protagonists, but what was queer literature like a hundred years ago? In this class series learners will study pre-Stonewall literature, loosely defined here as post-1900, and pre-1969, post-Stonewall literature, loosely defined here as post 1969 through the end of the twentieth century, and current queer literature, loosely defined as post-2000. 

In order to discuss queer literature we must also discuss social opinions and beliefs that shaped queer authors’ lives and writing, along with censorship and social perceptions that framed their lives. We will also learn about queer authors who broke those frames, and the way that queer people have stood up for themselves – a movement that was reflected in the writing.

The first third of the semester will be devoted to the movements that shaped queer literature as it headed into the 1900s. This includes the authors, poets, and dramatists who wrote about queer love and experiences, often in code. We will also talk about queer literature in the first few decades of the century, including one of the most famous queer novels of the time, Well of Loneliness, by Radclyffe Hall.

We will follow queer authors from the Roaring Twenties and into the Great Depression. We will then move through WWII and into the 50s, where we will deal with censorship, the communist Red Scare (or McCarthyism), as well as the burgeoning influence of  “pulp” novels. From there we will head into the growing queer moment of the 50s and 60s, as queer authors began to stand up in numbers, both socially and with their writing, as the social climate led up to one of the most well-known events in queer protest history – the Stonewall Riots.

For the second third of the semester we will be studying how with the social change swirling, queer literature started undergoing a dramatic shift. Queer people looked at their lives, and the way they were perceived by society, and began refusing to be the repressed group the public wanted them to be. They began writing about protagonists who had normal lives, and who didn’t always have to be unhappy. Throughout the decades as queer people became more outspoken and open, their literature dealt with families, relationships, AIDS, and society, as well as the evolution in how people of varying sexualities and genders self-identified. While society at large still held the perception that queer people were unacceptable, or even mentally ill, queer people were quickly asserting otherwise. 

In the first week we will talk about the impact that Stonewall and the surrounding movement had on the fiction landscape, and talk about the changes to the works that came out afterwards. Then, in each of the following three weeks we will explore the changes of a decade, and how they overlap with the others. In the seventies we saw more stories where – while the book might still have ended sadly – being queer was not seen as an inherently negative thing by the protagonist. Through the eighties and AIDS, queer literature continued to develop, with more and more positive portrayals, including the very first mainstream queer children’s book, and the emergence of other sexualities other than gay and lesbian on the page. Finally, as we head into the nineties and into the turn of the century, bisexual and trans people began to start to show up more frequently in novels and stories, and it grew easier to find their literature.  Censorship still existed, but authors – and readers – were fighting back. However, there are still obstacles for queer authors, and next we will study how those obstacles have shifted and changed in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. 

For the last third of the semester we will be covering several topics, and we won’t be splitting it cleanly into years. We will be discussing specific books, reading novels, sections, and samples, and talking about the books that illustrate a number of subjects.

The first two weeks we’ll loosely cover the queer fiction landscape between 2000-2010, with some overlap in topics and years, including:
The shifting of queer literature around the turn of the century
Early queer youth and YA books
The difficulty of getting an agent, or in getting interest from a publisher, for a book with queer protagonists, as well as authors being told to “straighten” their characters because it was too hard to sell books with queer protagonists
The demand by readers for a wide variety of sexualities, genders, and identities in their books
The rise of queer graphic novels and comics
The evolution of sexualities and gender in queer literature 
The rise in youth literature of books with queer protagonists as well as with queer families
The explosion of queer YA literature
Extensive queerness in genre fiction
Queerness in mainstream literature

Throughout the semester we will be talking about:
Queer lives in society
Queer literature in public consciousness
Queer books winning mainstream awards
Multiple awards specifically for queer fiction
Queer fiction being integrated into other sections in bookstores
The continuing censorship of queer books

Some of the authors we will discuss include, but are in no way limited to:
E. Lynn Harris, Michael Cunningham, Nancy Garden, Richard Meeker, John Donovan, Sarah Waters, Alice Walker, Armistead Maupin, Patricia Neal Warrren, Jane Rule, James Baldwin, Isabel Miller, Patricia Highsmith, Radclyffe Hall, Manuel Puig, and Gore Vidal.

NOTE: While queer literature has existed for centuries in one form or another, this class series will focus on literature from 1900 to 2020. In addition, as we will be focusing primarily on the social movement in the United States as shaped by the Stonewall Riots era, a good deal of the books are set in the USA. While the class focus has to be narrower in order to be manageable for a class series, every country has their own queer movement which is just as valid and just as important to learn about.

**Notes:
- All students will be given one opportunity to change their Zoom name to their preferred name and pronouns at the beginning of class. 
- While I am aware that there are reasons that a learner would prefer to keep their camera off, I do encourage them to be left on, and I require one visual check in at the beginning of each class.

When discussing themes, histories, and patterns in queer literature, parents should be aware that somewhat challenging topics such as homophobia, racism, depression, and others will inevitably be discussed, as these topics are a part of many queer people’s lives, and therefore their literature. These topics will be handled sensitively, and in the context of the work and the author’s lives. Literature referenced will be from both the adult and YA cannon, but while a novel as a whole might contain sexual or violent themes, the assigned readings will not contain gratuitous sex or violence.

In addition to being a member of, and active in, many aspects of the queer community, including activism and visibility, I also raised and homeschooled a queer child. The critical component of my MFA degree was on the history of queer protagonists in mainstream literature, a paper that was later published, and I have continued to expand on that research for further publication.
