Students will learn to close read a text in order to dig up details and organize their essay. They will use a graphic organizer (tree map) for outlining the argumentative essay into its parts: including: an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There are lessons on writing attention grabbing sentences, thesis statements, topic sentences, counter claims, and a final thought in conclusions. Students will learn how to write a five paragraph argumentative essay, its introduction, three body paragraphs and conclusion, per a Common Core rubric with a scorecard. Emphasis will be on writing a thesis statement and the parts of a body paragraph because the most points toward a perfect score on exams are gained in the body paragraphs. Body paragraphs include: a topic sentence, transitional sentence or attribution phrase, text evidence, citation, and elaboration.
Texts to be assign and graphic organizer(s) will be handed out during first lesson.
