I have been teaching piano for 16 years and I love meeting new students! I am a friendly, laid-back teacher who enjoys getting to know new people, and I love it when they are excited about music! I want my students to have fun during lessons and not to feel overwhelmed or pressured. This 10-week course allows me to find out a student's strengths in a one-on-one environment where the student has 100% of my attention. It is easy to modify or adjust my teaching style or methods to accommodate different types of learners. I have experience with teaching students from ages 4-65, and I have never met a student who couldn't learn music. During this course, students will learn: - music theory and performance - note reading - how notes on the staff - intervals - dynamics - how to play notes on the piano - proper hand position and placement - chords and how to play lead sheets Week 1 - get to know the student, talk about what kind of music they want to play, introduce notes on the keyboard and on the staff Week 2 - review, talk about the different kinds of notes, learn finger numbers Week 3 - practice a simple song using finger numbers or notes (depending on age). Talk about the metronome and rhythm. Week 4 - play the song that was assigned last week, learn CDE in the right hand on the piano. Talk about how notes can step on the staff Week 5 - perform the song that was assigned, learn AB in the left hand and practice a simple song using all 5 of these notes in "Butterfly" position. Week 6 - play the song that was assigned, possibly learn a C chord (depending on age). Discuss how notes can skip on the staff and look for examples Week 7 - play the assigned song, review steps/skips on the staff, learn a new type of note Week 8 - play the song that was assigned, practice the C chord and add an F chord. Work on playing hands together. Week 9 - continue to practice playing hands together, review rhythm and dynamics, if time permits add FG in the right hand. Week 10 - add FG in the left hand and review all notes on the staff. At this point students should be able to play songs in Middle C position! Lessons will include: - warmup activity (sight reading, technique, etc) - play songs that were assigned the previous week - discuss how to improve their practiced songs (add dynamics, review rhythm, add articulation, change tempo, etc) - if applicable, choose a new song to practice. Try to play parts of the song before the lesson is over, discuss any new theory concepts covered in the song. - if time permits, do a fun activity! Play a rhythm game, learn new chords, improvise a melody, strengthen note reading, "Name that Tune", etc.

Hello! My name is Julie Schmidt and I have 16 years of experience teaching individual and group piano lessons. Also, I have been playing and studying the piano for 35 years while earning a MS in Education. Music is definitely my passion. My favorite part of teaching the piano is finding out what kind of music motivates my students. Some of my students like reading the notes on the staff, playing classical music, and not straying far from the printed notes. Other students play more by ear and love to improvise! I always have a few students who want to be able to play songs quickly - I teach them chords and leadsheets so they can progress faster. I like to tailor my lessons to get a student excited about playing the piano. I use a variety of books, digital music, and resources to keep my lessons new and motivate my students to practice.
I have a laid-back teaching style and love to have fun during lessons. We will play games, improvise, compose, learn chords, and study different musical periods and composers. I really enjoy it when students bring their own music to lessons because I know that they are motivated to learn it!
Along with piano I have also earned a degree in Dietetics, owned a baking business, homeschooled my 3 children for a few years, taught in the public school, and taught Sunday School to middle schoolers. Luckily I did not do all of these things at the same time! I love reading, baking, line dancing, and attending concerts.
