Students will learn the basic elements of music theory and how to apply them on a piano keyboard and with their voice. Students will learn to play scales and chords on a keyboard. Students will learn how to read and write music. Students will learn to recognize musical intervals. There will be music to practice and quizzes to reinforce the class work. Several topics will be covered in each class with the main focus on learning music theory concepts and developing keyboard skills. The teacher will guide the student through the music theory and keyboard skills that are covered in class. The teaching style for this class is structured but flexible to the student’s abilities, prior experience and interests. Each class will cover a music theory sub-topic with handouts, an explanation, and demonstration of the material.

The goal of this class is to help the student understand and master basic musicianship skills.
Topics we will cover include:
Fundamentals of pitch and rhythm notation.
Finding the notes on the keyboard.
Matching pitch.
Playing the C major scale on the keyboard
Notes and rests.
Singing the major scale.
Playing major scales with sharps. (G, D etc.)
Playing major scales with flats. (F, Bb etc.)
Pitch id exercise 1. (treble and bass clef.)
Progressive rhythm etudes
Progressive sight singing melodies
Intervals; starting with diatonic intervals from major scale and eventually chromatic intervals.
chord structure
Playing the chords of the major scales starting with C major
Playing chord progressions on the keyboard.
Rhythmic and melodic transcription

Steve teaches at the Bass Collective in New York City and is the author of several books for bassists: Developing Reading Skills for the Contemporary Bassists, and Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian Rhythms for the Bass.

Steve has played both upright and electric bass professionally since1990. Steve's credits include Rock, Jazz, Blues, R&B, Classical, Theater, World Music and Big Band ensembles, in which he has performed everywhere from CBGB's to Lincoln Center.
Career highlights include a stint with the house band on Lifetime TV show Hot Properties, the Duke Ellington Band, Greek Music legend Dionysous Savaolpolis and Off-Broadway shows with award winning actresses Phylicia Rashad (Stormy Weather), Daisy Eagan (Little Prince). In 2017, Attack of the Elvis Impersonators at the Lion Theater
Steve freelances around New York and plays regularly with Willie and the Wolves, The Crescent City Maulers, Dig We Must, The Jacks, Mathew Piazzi and the Debonairs, Nick Palumbo, Sean Kershaw, Peter Frank, Katie Bloom.
