Come join this interactive, fun class to brush up on your reading and writing skills to help get prepared for fourth grade! Class Content: Each week we will meet to review third grade skills. During class we will use a variety of methods and learning styles including hands-on projects, paper assignments, sorts, visuals, books, and other activities to help all learners engage and make the most of this class and reinforce skills and help prepare for fourth grade. We will play games, complete projects and work on listening skills. Why This Class: I have been a brick and mortar teacher for ten years working with all elementary levels. I have seen through experience that summer is a critical time to keep those skills sharp and prevent the summer slide which can set a learner back up to two months in their education. Class Materials: Each week learners will be sent all print outs prior to class. These print outs will include a variety of activities for class including a book that all learners can print and keep. Learners will also need basic supplies available for class. These will include pencils, coloring materials, scissors, and glue. Special Considerations: Class dynamics may adjust time requirements up to 5 minutes. Tech usage: During class we may play online games utlizing kahoot. Please ensure you’re student either knows how to split their screen or is fine with pairing up with someone or with me depending on class dynamics. Class Schedule: Each day we will start with cursive handwriting practice as bell work for the first 5-10 minutes of class. Day 1: Phonics and Sight Words (sight words will be pulled from the third grade dolch sight word list and will cover 4-5 words each time we meet. Day 2: Reading Skills and Comprehension Activities (books will come from the website reading a-z) Day 3: Grammar and Writing Skills Week 1/Week of 6/2: word families-short vowels fiction-text evidence/ask and answer questions, key details Overview of Parts of Speech: noun, verb, adjective, pronouns, adverbs Personal Narrative Writing Planning and first draft of narrative writing Week 2/Week of 6/9: short vs. long vowels nonfiction-text evidence/ask and answer questions, key details Plural nouns Personal Narrative Writing Editing and final draft of narrative writing Week 3/Week of 6/16: silent letters fiction-fables, folktales, myths, compare and contrast Irregular verbs, verb tenses Opinion Writing: Introduction of opinion writing-what you need Week 4/Week of 6/23: homophones nonfiction-main ideas and details, compare and contrast subject-verb agreement Opinion Writing: Planning and first draft of opinion writing No Class week of June 30 Week 5/Week of 7/7: final e fiction-character traits, sequence conjunctions Opinion Writing: Editing and final draft of opinion writing Week 6/Week of 7/14: prefixes nonfiction-connections Types of sentences Persuasive Writing: Introduction of persuasive writing-what you need Week 7/Week of 7/21: suffixes fiction-Point of View Commas, quotation marks Persuasive Writing: Planning and first draft of persuasive writing Week 8/Week of 7/28: syllables nonfiction-point of view Titles, commas Persuasive Writing: Editing and final draft of persuasive writing **Taught throughout course: context clues, parts of literature, illustrations, text/graphic features, theme, plot, characters and setting, poetry

This course will move at a speed appropriate for the learners in class (extra directions, examples, etc). Learners will have a variety of activities. Learners are welcome to communicate through and have their video off after a video check.

There may be use of scissors and glue during class.
Tech usage: the websites may be used during class to allow the use of educational games. Please be nearby if any issues arise technology wise but make sure to stay off camera. This does not require any sort of account.
