Every student is a poet! This self- paced class consists of 6 video lessons that are geared towards students in grades 4-7 and can be viewed at the student's individual pace. The poetry writing process is broken down into its components of brainstorming, drafting, revising and editing, and publishing poetry. The processes of brainstorming, drafting, and revising are modeled for the students. Plenty of encouragement is offered along the way! These lessons are designed for beginners in the poetry writing process, but students familiar with writing poetry will also gain insights into revision skills. Students are encouraged to craft unique poems in nine different poetry styles. The poetry styles include: anagram, free verse, rhymed, humorous, tritina, acrostic, haiku, limerick, and concrete. Students will also learn to identify and use the literary devices: alliteration, hyperbole, meter, personification, simile, and metaphor. Handouts will be provided to help organize thoughts throughout several of the lessons. The instructor will not be assessing the student's work and the number of poems written is entirely up to the individual student. It is recommended to watch the lessons in order, as the learning builds upon prior lessons. Poetry is do-able and fun to write. Come write with me!

超過 6 週課 1:
An Introduction and Where Poems Hide- Finding Inspiration
This time we introduce the steps of writing poetry and then discuss where to find inspiration for poems. Thinking like poets, we create lists of ideas based upon observations and events that could be used for future poems. We also write in our first style of poetry- the fun anagram poem!
課 2:
Getting Started and Free Verse Poetry
This time we discuss the importance of focusing our ideas into one event or topic. We also practice using our five senses to describe our one chosen thing or event using a handout as a guide. This section also offers a discussion about participles, why they should be avoided, and how to avoid using them when writing poetry. We then use an idea from lesson one to demonstrate how to write your own free verse poem. Finally, you will be shown how to revise and edit your free verse rough draft.

Rhymed Poetry and Rhyme Scheme
This time we take a closer look at rhymed poetry. To begin, we look at an example of rhymed poetry and find examples of literary devices used in the poem. Students are then encouraged to write their own rhymed poem after the process is demonstrated and with the use of a handout as a guide. Finally, a demonstration is provided in how to edit their poem by removing extra words from their writing.

Humorous Poetry- Hyperbole
